In this study, sign language expressions were collected from two cooperating deaf people—one from the 30 year-old group and the other from the 70 year-old group from each prefecture, and the Japanese Sign Language (JSL) Map was created on the basis of the data collected. Please understand the research objectives and take note in advance that the sign language expressions in the JSL map (prototype) are not necessarily considered to be common expressions in each prefecture.
Click on a word/phrase you wish to look for out of the 30 words/phrases listed in the "Word/Phrase" column on the left. A regional distribution for each age group will be displayed by clicking on either box in the "Age Group" column below the "Word/Phrase" column.
Colored prefecture boxes (except ones in white) mean that the same sign language expressions are shared for the selected word/phrase among prefectures in the same color across age groups . Videos of the sign language expressions will be displayed by clicking on the boxes or colored boxes to the upper left.
Colorless (white) prefecture boxes mean that the same sign language expressions are not shared for the selected word/phrase with any other prefecture across age groups . In other words, all sign language expressions displayed by clicking on the white boxes are different from each other.
A combination of two or three colors in prefecture boxes means that the same person presented multiple different expressions. Additionally, expressions that were presented with signers saying, "there used to be an expression like this as well before," are considered to be "those that are no longer used today" and excluded from the investigation.
